Hit & Run

While walking WY to the pedestrian crossing outside the school this morning, R heard a loud screech and *BANG*! He thought that it was just one of those vehicles on the road which had to pull to a halt abruptly because of a change in the traffic lights.

But when R returned to our car which was parked in a roadside parking lot in one of the Lorongs opposite the school, he saw to our dismay that someone had kissed the front right corner of our car, leaving a big nasty dent in the front bumper (which has become a little dislodged) + nasty scratches on the right side of the car & right front lights.

Arrhhhhh!! Whoever that damned driver was!!!!!!

Of course nobody 'owned up' for this early-morning crime. So we had to make a police report for the hit & run and send our car for a check-up. We may or may not make an insurance claim eventually because given the terms of the insurance policy, it may not make economic sense to do so.

But whatever the final outcome, we are likely to end up $1K - $2K poorer, all because of that damned driver!

Sigh. Perhaps this is 破财消灾... Better things will be on their way soon lah, hor.....

Well, is it the side that already had some scratches?

I remember that Peihee suggested a guy/shop in Punggol or somewhere ulu, where it is much cheaper, but you have to leave car with him for 1 day. Call him for contact, I have given R the number before, I think. I think it is below $1k to repair bumper and respray.

That means the sparkling blueray light bulb I bought, is also kaputt liao?
Wah lao eh.

Now is also a good time you learn the true view of Car Insurance in Singapore.

In parking accidents, in CH, usually it is covered 100% with no reduction in NCB (because not your fault mah). But in Singapore, they will make it so difficult or expensive for you, you end up paying out of your own pocket.

Then, why have insurance?

Because someone UP there, wants a cut of the tax he collects.

Did you try asking around, if someone saw the accident?

Don't claim insurance if the repair bill is less than S$1k.

It is wiser to pay yourself, to save on the premium (No claim bonus).

Ask Pei Hee.

Main distributor workshop eventually quoted something like $700+ for a new bumper - they won't (bother to) repair.

Lights are ok though surface scratched - mark left there looks like white paint, hence our guess that the damed driver was driving a whilte/light coloured car.

Finally, R decided to go to the workshop (which repaired our previous car when taxi kissed our butt).

When mechanic heard that it is a hit & run by unknown party, he suggested that perhaps he just needs to 'knock' the bumper back in place. Scratches can be 'polished' off. Estimated cost: $165.

So R brought our car in to him, lor. Car collected in about 8 hours. Final bill: $150.

About insurance - ya, my exact sentiments: WHY have insurance if it is not going to pay for things like this without penalising us?!!!! It was not as if we were parking illegally or something. How can they say we must be penalised by our NCB?! Damned ridiculous!!!!!!!!

Hi, you mean the bumper is just knocked back without any painting?
And the scratches can be polished off?
Hmm, either it is a rush job, or this guy is really cheap or the dent is not so bad as you described (or I imagined).

WY, the bad thing is not about knocking the car. The bad thing is that the guy who did it, did not own up or leave his name. He is not a responsible person. We can all learn from this.
IF it was us who bumped someone else's car, then what do we do?

By the way, be also wary. Why did the repair take 8hrs? Hmm, take note of the car performance in the next few days. I am not sure how much you can trust this shop, but then I am oversensitive about such "cheap jobs".
