Shaky Tooth No More & Sunday's 'Celebration'

WF's shaky tooth has fallen off yesterday during breakfast in CH school!

Mother and CP are both very relieved and happy - they say it's better this way because there was this 'danger' of the tooth being accidentally swallowed if it remained so wobbly. Although I am also quite relieved that that tooth has finally decided to make way for the new one (which is nothing close to emerging yet), somehow I feel a tinge of 'sadness' about it.

Perhaps, it is because I know the falling-off is premature and that gap on the gum will probably remain for a long time. And when I saw the fallen tooth yesterday, it was really so much more hollow than WY's equivalent - which probably meant that it had really stopped growing since a long time ago. Sigh.

Fortunately, WF remains very positive about the whole thing. He told me quite happily about the shaky tooth falling off, when R and I went to bring him home from CH school yesterday. In fact, he was quite gleeful about it! All the time when his teacher was explaining how the tooth had fallen off and was in his lunch-box (WF had placed it there just like we instructed him to do if the tooth fell off whilst he was in school), WF went on grinning at R and me to show off the gap where that tooth had been!

Then later in the evening, he asked me if the new tooth is 'going to come out'. I told him that it won't be so soon because it is still growing and is not ready yet. I think we will fix an appointment with his dentist for a check-up soon.

**********************

Last Sunday, we went Junction 8 because WY was keen to make use of the Yoshinoya discount/special offer coupons which he had obtained when we went to the Yoshinoya outlet at World Trade Centre/Vivo City with HA and J during their December 2006 visit.

After the lunch at Yoshinoya, we walked about a little because we wanted to buy a pair of 'eyes' for his Speech & Drama hand-puppet. WF and R decided to go look at the TV-related stuff at Best Denki shop (again!) whilst WY and I went about looking for the 'eyes'.

To our disppointment, we found nothing close to what we had in mind. Then we ventured into this gift shop selling many different types of beads which are often used to make handphone accessories and bracelets etc. Some of the colourful beads were a little like 'girly' stuff, but others looked quite gender-free. Most of the beads were glittery although some actually looked very 'matt'.

WY and I both agree, however, that they all looked quite exciting, and rather 'in'! As we browsed the trays and trays of beads, we saw that some beads actually had letters printed on them! So, after a while, we decided to buy a pair of beads with the letter 'O' on them as a 'standby' which we would use as the 'eyes' for his hand-puppet if we really couldn't find anything more suitable. That pair of beads cost me $1.80. Woah!

Later on, we also custom-made a stainless steel bookmark using the letter-beads for WY's best friend in CH school because that boy is going to quit BASC at the end of this month. I know that WY is rather sad about his friend's impending departure, and so even though I knew that the bookmark would cost quite a lot of money (it finally cost $8.40), I agreed to pay for it.

WY went about selecting the beads he wanted, and then he also asked if he could pick a tiny fish-toy to be attached to the end of the bookmark. WY explained that to him, the fish is part of Nature, and so the fish-toy would represent the common passion for Nature/National Geographics which he shares with this friend of his. :)

从这个小小的举动, 我再次肯定 WY 真的是一个多么有情感的孩子啊!

After we paid for the bookmark, we met up with R and WF once again. Then we proceeded to the basement carpark. Just as we passed by the Polar cakes & pastry outlet at B1, WY and I saw one particular cake amongst those on display. Woah! WY and I instantaneously agreed that WF would definitely be delighted to see this! Without any hesitation, I decided to get it for our 'post-dinner dessert':

Pretty, right?! WF was so thrilled to see this cake in the evening that he readily posed with it just before we cut it - and finished it! R had to make some green tea for himself to go along, though, because it was a butter-cream cake! :)

*********************************

When we cut the cake on Sunday evening, R mumbled a fair bit about why we were cutting and eating a cake when it wasn't anybody's birthday etc. Actually, that was also true lah, we just had my birthday cake the week before and there wasn't really a need to buy a cake for 'dessert'.

But then, I was so attracted to that cake, and just couldn't resist bringing it home, mah! Especially since WF is such a great fan of Thomas & His Friends, how could I resist grabbing it before any other kid's parent buys it home, right?!

Well.... then, on Monday, I read from Kay-AngMo that Sunday had been HA and M's 7th wedding anniversary! What coincidence! So, we had unknowingly and remotely 'celebrated' it, lor! Hahahahaa....

To HA & M: Happy Anniversary! :)

Perfectly Great Sunday!

R and I had a leisurely breakfast at Toa Payoh after we sent WY and WF to 文化艺术团. We actually had time for refills of our tea - incredible, hor?! Usually I would get a cold Milo rather than hot tea because there wouldn't be time to even finish the hot tea.

Then we took a leisurely walk back to wait for WF to be dismissed from class first, followed by WY 20 minutes later. The boys were rather excited that we were going to visit CP at AMK that day. WF kept asking:

WF : Mama, what are we going to do at DuaYi's house?

me : Papa is going to help DuaYi set up her new DVD home theatre system.

WF : Then what are we going to do?

me : Erm, then we are going to have pizza at DuaYi's house - remember? DuaYi told GeGe yesterday that she will order pizza for us all?

WF : Then after that, what are we going to do?

(I pondered a while, then it suddenly dawned upon me that WF was trying to sound me out if playing computer games was on our programme for the day.)

me : Then we will see what DuaYi needs us to help her to do, lor.

WF : Erm, then after that, what are we going to do?

me : After that, I don't know yet.......

WF : Are we going to play computer games?

(There, see what I mean.)

me : Erm, I think yes, after you and GeGe have showered and eaten your lunch.

WF + WY : Yeh!!!!

On our way to AMK, we decided to make a detour to Junction 8. We took a leisurely stroll in Best Denki to check out the LCD TVs available. No lah, we are not changing our CRT TV any time soon, but just kaypoh-ing to see what is available these days - CP is considering to change her TV to 'match' her new DVD home theatre set. She has been so thrilled at her winning the 6th prize at her company's D&D lucky draw! And it has been such a properous and very lucky year for her, so far so good!

The range is really quite wide, be it brand, quality or price, but my personal favourite is a 42" one (I think it is a Samsung, cannot be sure though). For CP's place, maybe good to get a 32"; anything smaller will be quite insignificant and look quite dwarfed.

Whilst browsing at Best Denki, R and WY were together. WF and I walked ahead of them. At one point, WF and I went to view some Philips LCDs but WF quickly got distracted by some other TVs which were showing some cartoons. He tried to pull me to view the cartoons but I told him that we would do that together after I had seen the Philips.

Not surprisingly, he refused. I stayed on at the Philips corner. From the corner of my eyes, however, I could see WF walk off all by himself (just like what he did once in Ikea). So, without calling him aloud, I decided to keep watch from a distance out of his sight.

After watching the cartoons briefly (he probably got bored), he walked away (not towards the Philips corner but back towards the direction where we had been much earlier on). Maybe he was trying to get to R and WY, but he couldn't find them anywhere nearby. So he retraced his steps to the cartoons and then towards the Philips corner again. This time, he was clearly looking for me but of course, couldn't see me either.

From where I stood, I could see him pick up his pace whilst looking frantically left and right. So I headed back to just outside the Philips corner (where he would be able to see me more easily) and stood there waiting for him to emerge from the maze of TVs.

And true enough, moments later, he spotted me and sprinted to me in a flash, his face all red and wet with flowing tears. In between loud sobs, he asked accusingly:

WF : Mama, I couldn't find you! Where have you been?!

me : (sounding cool, calm and collected) I have been here, but you walked away from me all by yourself!

WF : (crying aloud now) I couldn't find you! (continued crying....)

me : You walked away all by yourself again, just like you did last time at the other shop (ie Ikea), right?

[By now, the bottom half of my t-shirt was already quite wet with his tears (and mucus!) - yikes!]

WF : No, I don't want to do that again. (crying now subsided to sobs....)

me : Ok, if you do it again and you cannot find me, then you will have to find your way home by yourself, understand? (In a much sterner tone) Would you want want that to happen?

WF : (tightening his hug and resuming loud sobs again) No!

me : Don't walk off by yourself again, understand?

WF : (wiping his tears off with his bare hands) Understood.

Sigh, I hope he really learns his lesson this time.

When we joined R and WY at the EzyVideo located inside Best Denki, we selected 'The Banquet' DVD and one 'Hi-5' vcd for CP's place. After payment, we proceeded to Haagen Daz - I have a 30% birthday-month discount mah. I chose a few pints for take-away and we were about to return to the car when I suddenly remembered that CP had said that we should pick up some fruits if we could.

So WY and I made a quick dash into the supermarket to grab a watermelon and some persimmons, then we were on our way to AMK. First to deliver 2 pints of Haagen Daz to a colleague because she had given me a lipstick for my birthday, then to CP's house.

****************************

The afternoon was spent entirely at CP's house. R took charge of the setting up of the DVD system. I got the fruits ready while CP ordered the pizzas and saw to the boys' showers. WY and WF started their games on the computers as I had promised them - there were 2 laptops because I brought mine there.

At about 4pm, WF asked to take his nap and was soon sound asleep. And I took over the laptop to check emails, draft a blog posting and place an order for borage oil. After WY had exhausted his one-hour time limit on the PC, he started to study the game manual - to prepare himself better for his next try at the game mah!

How come boys cannot use this same thinking when it comes to school work and study ah?! How wise and sensible that would be!

Anyway, later on R and WY were assigned to buy dinner. And it was a truly sumptious spread! Apart from the fishball soup with 'yellow noodles' which WF ordered, here's what they bought: 福建面、新洲米粉、海鲜炒河粉、XO酱鸡翅膀、麦片虾、虾枣.

Woah! For anyone who might be envious (yet again), here's a picture of the food for you to savour - visually lah!

As school was going to restart early next morning, we didn't want to stay till very late. So we packed up soon after dinner and washing up.

Just before we left, however, Mother called with a very weird and funny OL story. CP didn't elaborate, but I roughly guessed that it was a troublesome one.

******************************

As soon as we got the boys showered and changed after we got home, I received Mother's call - so I got to hear the same weird and funny story plus an update. Check out onlysonsmatter later for a summary of the drama.

After speaking to Mother, I proceeded to shower. Midway, I suddenly got a bit worried - what if OL finds her way up somehow to our unit and asks to be let in?! Woah lao! I quickly called out to R to tell him to be mindful if he does answer any call at the door. I managed to re-tell the story to him only after I finished my shower.

Sigh, what a drama-tic end to a perfectly great Sunday!

BiRtHdAy 2007

We had tonnes of ironing to do this week because we haven't been ironing for 2 weeks in a row! Back-breaking chore....

But the simple but great evening that followed more than made up for it.

We had steamboat for dinner. And because we started at about 6pm, we could savour the sliced pork, sliced fish, sliced liver, prawns, sotong balls, meat balls, fish dumplings, various yong tau hu items, 3 different greens plus tang-hoon and yellow noodles, all at a leisurely pace. Phew! What a mouthful that was, right?! :)

Of course there were also items which I don't take - eg cuttlefish slices. And there were 3 different chillie sauces, but my favourite was still the dark-purple yong tau hu sweet sauce. Somehow, this always tastes so good with the tang-hoon and yellow noodles. Mmm.....

There was plenty of time to relax after the steamboat. The kids migrated to Mother's room "automatically" for their GameBoy sessions. Poor WF wasn't allowed (by the older boys) to take part, so he shuttled between Mother's room, the living room (where he switched the TV channels every now and then, much to our dismay and irrirtatedness) and the kitchen (where he would ask to be given a cup of F&N orange - each of which he said would be "the last one"!).

Father returned from work after we all had finished dinner. So instead of enjoying his dinner over the steaming-hot pot, he had his dinner cooked for him by Mother. Mother said she had prepared the OL's dinner the same way earlier too.

WS had another serving of his special soup. Some Chinese herbal concoction which is usually taken by boys close to onset of puberty. Said to 'lengthen' and 'strengthen' the skeletal frame. I think Mother also gave it to HA last time, if I remember correctly. And as was done for the previous 2 servings, WS got the privilege of having multiple chocolate bars to accompany the super-bitter brew. Except that this time, cheeky and bored WF hijacked one of the bars for sharing with YP. Hahahaa....

Shortly after the soup had been drunk, we proceeded to take out the Secret Recipe cake which YP had bought, for the cake-cutting. Heeeheeeeeheee....... I think YP will now always remember how I had criticised some other cakes she had tended to buy off the shelf on an impromptu basis last time.

(But isn't it true that as we become more exposed to other brands and places, our tastes and experiences will become more 'sophisticated', so our expectations will also go up mah! And because we need to be more conscientious not to over-indulge calorie-wise, we should now be more selective and try out new or better options rather than simply heading for BengawanSolo or AngieTheChoice or Emicakes etc only, correct? It's definitely not a price issue, because the BengawanSolo, AngieTheChoice and Emicakes are also not exactly cheap, hor. Anyway, simply said, to me, it is a reflection of the thoughts which have gone into the cake lah.)

So this time it was Mango Delight from Secret Recipe. All of us enjoyed it. Mother was especially full of compliments for the cake - she said it was not chocolate-y at all (she doesn't like the chocolate-y ones) and not too sweet. Even Father enjoyed his slice 'gleefully' ('gleeful' because Mother had teased him about giving a birthday angpow lah).

So, this is the pretty and delicious Mango Delight we had for my birthday in 2007:

哎,唯一美中不足的,是我自己那两个宝贝都不知道是谁的生日!听到生日歌,才恍然大悟!! 哎。。。。。。。。

Shaky Tooth

WF has a very shaky left front upper incisor. It was accidentally knocked by his classmate yesterday and the part of his gum where the tooth is, bled (again).

******************

WF's teeth had developed very early. I remember that I first spotted both of the lower incisors emerging when I was giving him baby cereal one morning just 1+ weeks after he turned 4 months old. I was still on no-pay leave then and so hadn't returned to office yet.

He was sitting in his colourful bouncer after his morning bath. (We all love that bouncer - it can actually vibrate! It was a gift from CP's colleagues, and it was one of the most useful baby gifts we have ever received and which we really treasured. We took very good care of it and it is now being used by S all the way in Switzerland!)

I was giving him his brown rice cereal, spoonful by spoonful. Then as we were about to finish, I suddenly saw 2 white 'slits' in his lower gums. I pondered momentarily. Very incredible because it would be at least another 2 weeks before he turned 5 months old! And the books always say the baby's 1st tooth is expected from about 5 months, right?! (WY's first tooth had emerged when he was about 5+ months old.)

So I quickly called the maid (we had one then) to come to see. She stopped her chores and squatted down to try to peer into WF's mouth. After about 2 seconds, she also exclaimed excitedly, "Ya! Ma'am! Got teeth already, can see!"

I remember that we were both so excited that little WF just looked at us intently, as if asking us, "What's the fuss?"!!!! :)

From that morning onwards, I did a quick informal visual check of the teeth's progress at almost every possible opportunity. Even the maid asked me every now and then whether other teeth had emerged.

These 2 teeth grew, of course, and others also started to emerge. Some singly, others in pairs. By the time WF turned 2 years, he had most of his baby teeth. An early developer, definitely, dentally speaking.

************************************

WY's 7th birthday was a very quiet event - Mother and CP were away in Switzerland then - but we didn't want WY to feel 'left out' or 'neglected' because WF had a birthday celebration in LV school (plus a dinner with the rest of the family at Fatty Weng Restaurant) just 2 week before WY's birthday, so we decided to have a private birthday cake-cutting at home for WY.

So it was about 8pm on WY's 7th birthday when R started to get the candles and decorations ready. I was about to finish hanging the wet laundry and the boys were playing with some balloons in the living room. WF was especially fond of kicking and chasing the balloons which had been inflated by the manual balloon pump earlier. I remember he was chuckling away and WY was also playing to his heart's content.

All of a sudden, we heard a really loud THUD followed by 2 seconds of silence then followed by big loud WAILS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

R and I dropped everything and dashed into the living room to find a wailing WF and a dazed WY standing close to him. I don't recall whether much conversation followed after the initial questions of "What happened?", but I remember we held WF closely to comfort him while fumbling to try to 'assess' where he has been injured.

His gums were bleeding profusely and it wasn't immediately clear whether he had hurt his teeth or only scratched his lips etc. We grabbed tissue paper by bunches and tried to dab the blood off. My heart started to race and my head began to swirl. I yelled at WY for not taking care of his little brother. I also started to yell at R for not watching out for WF since he was supposed to be near(er) the boys at that time.

Ya, I know the yelling wasn't going to help but that was just how (badly) I had responded to the accident. I knew it was bad reaction, and I started to cry while trying to pacify and calm the wailing WF. Almost impossible because I wasn't calm myself. In fact, I think I was hysterical.

After a while, when WF's wails 'subsided' a little, R got WF to open his mouth and it was then that we realised that poor WF had chipped his left front upper incisor! Quite a substantial chip, considering that his teeth are all not very 'big'.
So we started to frantically search the floor for the fallen chip but to no avail. R and WY even went on their knees to try to see if the chip could have 'bounced' to somewhere under the safa. Alas, nothing could be found. I held on to WF who continued to cry so pitifully.

After a while, WF stopped crying. We checked his teeth again and realised that not one but both of his front upper incisors were shaky (the chipped one was more shaky, of course, but it was scary to see that both teeth were shaky)! We decided that we would bring WF to the dentist for a proper assessment and advice 1st thing next morning.

Meanwhile, I think WY also realised the severity of the accident and was generally quite stunned by everything. R recovered his composure fairly quickly - thank goodness he did, because we also knew that we had to take care of this big-little boy's feelings too, so we tried to calm ourselves down.

About half an hour later, when WF was ok enough to resume joking with WY (much to our relief), we proceeded to cut the cake as planned. I remember WF also ate the cake anyway albeit very 'tenderly'.

It was the cake with 3 off-road monster truck toys. We gave a substantial portion of the 2-kg cake to the opposite neighbour (who had 2 daughters whose ages are between WY's and WF's). 2kg was the minimum order for that design.

***************************

Early next morning, we left WY with AhYee after she came by, and brought WF to NUH. We had no prior appointment, but the staff at the dental clinic were very understanding and made arrangements for us to see the paediatric specialist anyway.

The dentist was very professional and during the whole checkup, kept reassuring WF and spoke to him in a comforting voice, asking him for 'permission' to check his teeth and very bruised gums etc. I guess it helped that WF had accompanied WY to the clinic during WY's regular dental checkups although WF himself had not actually been seated on the dental chair until that morning.

Conclusion of the dentist was that the left front upper incisor was chipped (obvious, lah, right?!) but don't need to extract or anything like that. The impact must have been quite great, and that was why the teeth became shaky (logical, lah, hor?!). Gums around these 2 teeth were very bruised but otherwise everything looked ok. No treatment was needed for the time being, but we had to watch out for any further swelling or signs of infection etc.

My heart ached so much when the dentist warned that given the shakiness of the 2 teeth, there was a high chance that these teeth may have been detached from the jaw bone and may gradually die off before maturity. I think she could sense my anxiety (of course lah, with the non-stop questions that I kept posing to her!) and gently suggested that we just observed the progress till a review the following week or so.

So, I took childcare leave that day to keep WF company. The diagnosis recorded on the MC was 'trauma to upper front incisors due to fall'. Trauma, yes, definitely, but not only to incisors ah......

The few days following the accident, AhYee helped to keep dinner simple and 'soft' like porridge etc. When Mother called one of the evenings, we told her briefly about the accident.

********************************

As days and weeks went by, the right tooth became more steady and eventually stopped shaking. What a relief.

The left tooth, however, remained shaky although with the recovery of the swollen gums, the shakiness was substantially reduced.

Thankfully, there had been no signs of infection and all the dental checkups and reviews have so far been ok. ...... Ok, that is, until one night some time in June 2006 (I cannot recall the exact date), WF played a fool on my bed and fell off it and knocked his front teeth again.

This time, the gums bled less profusely; but it was no less worrying because we saw that the right tooth had become shaky again and the already-shaky left tooth had become even shakier!!

Now that we had previous experience of such 'trauma on teeth', R and I were more 'steady' and didn't plunge into a panic mode like before. We pacified and soothed WF (who, of course, cried in pain after the fall) but decided that we should observe for a while instead of rushing to the dentist again. In any case, the boys were scheduled to visit the dentist in about 3 days' time, so we waited.

In the meantime, I explained to WF in a very serious and stern tone that he had once again injured his teeth, and warned that if he still didn't take good care of them, he could possibly lose all his teeth. And if that ever happened, he wouldn't be able to speak properly, read properly, sing properly, drink properly, eat properly (including his favourite bak-hu and fishballs) etc etc. As expected, he burst into loud sobs at each mention of these activities and food items. In between sobs, he kept telling me that the dentist could and would help him to put things right.

Actually, he understood all that I said, because he actually repeated to me that night before he finally went to bed, "Mama, I will take care of my teeth. Cannot knock, right? The dentist will help to repair it, correct?" I could only tell him that the dentist would try.

By the time we went to the dentist as scheduled, the bruise had already gone. We updated the dentist nevertheless of this 2nd fall. The dentist ordered a dental x-ray on the 2 front incisors, just to find out better how things were below the gum-line.

When the x-rays came back, we found that there was a hairline crack at the roots of the right upper incisor. According to the dentist, this should heal so long as there is no further impact on it. The x-rays also showed that roots of the left upper incisor had already dissolved, ie this left tooth was already detached from the jawbone and was no longer growing... (Argh! *sob* *sob* *sob*...)

The dentist explained that this was probably due to the impact during the 1st accident. There was nothing to be unduly worried about unless infection sets in, in which case, the ongoing development of the replacement adult tooth may be adversely affected. So, like before, her advice was to observe good oral hygiene and to watch out for signs of infection eg swelling at the gum near this tooth and seek immediate treatment if infection sets in.

I asked if it would be better to extract the tooth. She explained her view that extraction was not necessary. She also explained that to extract the tooth, she would have to give that dreadful anaesthesia shot which would almost certainly make WF's dental experience an awful and horrendous one. So, very straighforward decision, right?

So, from that day on, I took super extra care to brush this very shaky tooth very clean each night. To prevent WF from accidentally 'dislodging' the rootless tooth, we arranged for him to only gargle his mouth rather than brush his teeth before his naps in CH school. We also reminded WF to always use his other teeth to chew his food and to avoid biting hard on his front teeth. We also gave umpteen reminders to the teachers to keep reminding WF to be careful while eating and playing in school.

Meanwhile, I also started to ask for divine help to watch over WF and to protect his teeth from further trauma. I was particularly worried that WF might be putting up with the discomfort of a shaky tooth but not knowing how to voice out his discomfort. I asked that if it were better for the shaky tooth to fall off, let it fall off soon and smoothly; if it were better for WF to retain the shaky tooth till a later date, let the shaky tooth become more steady once again.

One night soon after that, I overheard WF 'grinding' his teeth in his sleep and the 'grinding' sounds actually ended abruptly with a relatively loud creak! I switched on the lamp to check on him but found him fast asleep like usual, so I thought all was well and went back to sleep.

In the morning that followed, when WF woke up, R and I were shocked to see WF's upper gums and part of his lips bloodstained! There were several drops of dried blood on the pillowcase but apart from that, there was nothing unusual.

After coaxing the little boy to open his mouth to let us take a look, we found that whatever bleeding there had been earlier had already stopped. The shaky tooth, however, was now somehow 'pushed' further into the gums at an awkward angle! When we tested the tooth gently, it was significantly less shaky.

And so, that was how the shaky tooth came to be positioned at that special angle.

Through the subsequent months, the tooth remained like this. It does not seem to bother WF, so I take it that it is meant to stay till the new tooth is ready. And to repeated suggestions to extract the tooth, I now only say this: "No need for extraction. Extraction would have made things worse. Just let it be until it is ready to be replaced."

*********************

Yesterday, his teacher called me in the afternoon to inform me that WF's classmate had during play-time accidentally knocked into WF's teeth and the gums had bled. Sigh. The bleeding had stopped after she got WF to gargle his mouth etc.

At night, I took special extra care to brush the shaky tooth and to check on it. I think it has become even shakier now, but it may not be ready to fall off yet.

It bled briefly again this morning when I cleaned him up. He told me there was no pain, so after some gargling, we went to school. Before we left him, I told the principal to get the teachers to watch out for any further bleeding and if it bled again, to call me. And of course, the usual reminders about non-biting or chewing with the front teeth etc.

Up to now, I have not heard from the school. I hope they won't call.

Exam, Think, Eat, Sleep

Last Saturday was one of the shortest Saturday I have ever had.

The day started early although WF didn't have music lesson that day (it was Parents-Teacher-Meeting aka waste time session which I couldn't attend anyway). WY was scheduled to take his music theory exam that morning.

So we had our breakfast at home, then got the kids to shower and get dressed. Then as we went off, I kept reminding WY to check that he had his stationery, student pass, water bottle and jacket with him. Along the way, we did our customary 'oral' revision - you know, a quiz-like Q&A on the various topics to be tested on in the exam & things to take note of (even simple things like writing clearly, erasing well before rewriting etc).

The exam venue was a 10-min drive away in Aljunied Road. CPA House. The 2 miserable lifts inside this place were jam-packed, so we didn't even have to think twice to take to the stairs. We went up to the 2nd storey, thinking that we could perhaps take the lift on its way down before it goes up to our exam room on the 5th floor. So we waited briefly at the 2nd storey, only to realise that the lift wasn't coming anyway.

WY and I exchanged glances and without having to say anything, we both just turned to the staircase once more, and walked up another 3 floors. Fortunately, we still had about 15 minutes before the scheduled exam time, so we could still even out our panting breaths before going into the room.

The invigilators ushered the children to their allocated seats. WY put on his jacket and took a sip of his water as I took out his student pass for verification etc. In no time, he was seated and all ready for the paper. I decided to wait along the corridor since I hadn't told WY where else to meet after he has handed in his paper.

As I waited along the corridor outside the room, I could hear the invigilator's instructions, "You may use either pen or pencil for your answers.....". I looked around me as I waited. There was a father, 2 other mothers, a grandmother and 3 maids also waiting along the corridor.

The father soon settled to a corner, sat on the floor cross-legged and buried himself in his newspapers. Very typical of fathers-in-waiting.

One of the mothers also sat on the floor silently - her husband was probably angmo because her daughters looked clearly eurasian. Her looks were one of nonchalance.

The other mother began to talk loudly on her handphone, discussing what sounds like office-politics issues. Very inconsiderate as she went on and on at a 'normal' volume with no attempts to lower her volume. Since there was no soundproofing provision, I was certain she could be heard by the children toiling in the exam room. >:(

The grandmother looked out of the windows while holding on to a sling water bottle. We exchanged a smile and a nod when our eyes met.

By this time, the 3 maids (who must have gotten acquainted that morning because they came separately and didn't seem to know one another earlier) had adjourned to the staircase. They just sat at the staircase landing and chatted gaily, like old friends reminiscing their 'good old days'. Amazing, hor, how they can just assemble into a clique just there and then! Ocassionally, one would open the staircase door and peep to see if her charge(s) had come out or not - the others didn't seem to care, though.

Then a question came to my mind - why were these maids being assigned to wait for their employers' kids, ha? I mean, isn't it as good as sending the kids to exam alone, as far as moral/parental support is concerned? Getting the maid to wait for the children was probably a practical thing to do lah, to make sure that the kids don't get lost after the exam has ended etc. But wouldn't it have been so much more encouraging and so much greater a morale booster to have your parent accompany you to the exam hall?! I think WY and WF are much better off than these other kids, at least in this respect....

WY handed in his paper less than an hour after it started. He reassured me readily, "Mama, the questions were very easy! I checked and checked many times already, then I handed up."

So we went to Popular at The Majestic, bought many Chinese books including a handbook on travels to China. It was very weird that this outlet no longer carries any English titles - I say weird because when this outlet 1st opened, it carried some English titles, then I think they probably weren't popular, so they did away with them. Then just some time late last year, they relaunched English titles (with a relatively good collection of children's books) and yet now, barely half a year later, the English titles are gone again. Very disturbing for customers leh - how to trust whether we can find English books the next time we want to drop by?

Anyway, after that, we went to Swensen's as promised. Food was ok though service was nothing to crow about. The manager wore such a sulky look that it actually made me wonder if he was hoping his customers would leave soon or something.

Between R, WY, WF and myself, we finished a Cookie Summit, a Double Berry and a Frosted Chocolate Malt (the last item was mainly by me alone). By the time we were done, I was so full that I almost didn't want to move an inch. So very very sinful and unhealthy. *tsk* *tsk* *tsk* :(

On our walk back to the car, we stopped by our favourite store, OG and picked up 4 working shirts for R, one outing shirt + one jacket for WY and 4 computer games collectively for R, WY and WF. Nothing for me.

When we went back home, the kids went about their shower after much nagging. After laundry was hung, I started to pack and reshuffle some stationery stock. Then, this is the funny part: as I packed and unpacked and repacked, I felt my system slowing down, little by little. I felt drowsier and drowsier.... then I gave in and took a snooze on the hard cold floor.......

As the cuckoo clock struck 5, I woke with a startle. On seeing me in such a 'state', R suggested that I go to the bed to take a 'proper nap'. So I changed and in under 3 minutes, was on the bed again.

From then till 4:30am the next day, I only remember these:

a) WY told me, "Mama, GorGor and WP are at A-Mah's place already." (I remember I just waved him off and told him to tell R to bring them to Mother's place);

b) the phone rang but I couldn't muster enough energy to get up to answer it (the caller(s) gave up after 2 tries of 4-5 rings, I think);

c) WF tried to snuggle next to me after he had changed into his pyjamas but R 'warned' him against 'disturbing' me;

d) suddenly, I remembered that I hadn't showered and hadn't brushed my teeth (but again, I couldn't muster enough energy to get up to do these).

When I woke up at 4:30am, all was quiet, so the creaks of my aching body were especially loud. As I tried to move left, the back hurt; as I attempted to move right, the back hurt even more. Aiyoh, it was so jiak-lat!!! Ouch! And Ouch!!

And so, for the 1st time in my life, I actually got up at 4:30am to do some stretching exercises! After 3 rounds of stretching-then-resting-then-stretching-again-then-resting-again...., the aches finally eased off... Not completely gone, but much better than before....

By the time the usual morning chores were done, the sun had already arisen and it was time to get the the others up for 文化艺术团....

**********************************

Actually, now that I think about it, it was quite scary to have such die-die-also-must-sleep attacks. The last time this had happened was during our trip to Titisse, after that alocohol-laden Blackforest Cake. Woah, that was another jiak-lat time. Could hear the people around me talking but just couldn't respond because too sapped to even try to say anything or move any limb.....

So, after some analyses, I told R that it must have been that sinful ice-cream meal. So to avoid another such attack, must make sure I don't 暴饮暴食 again.....

Whoever's reading this posting, don't laugh and do not try to dispense unsolicited advice, hor. I said don't laugh!

Tremors

Yesterday, I felt earthquake tremors for the 1st time in my life.

I was seated at my desk doing work when suddenly my colleague and I heard someone racing past our work stations towards the door. This 'racing' colleague is a feather-weight lady who was thumping down the isle because she was rushing to a meeting. (Running to a meeting at the last minute is common here because officers in charge of items which are scheduled to be tabled to Management at review meetings will often be informed to go to the conference room only when it is their turn to present their item.)

Just as I looked up from my laptop, I suddenly felt the carpeted floor sway a little. My feet were both flat on the floor because I was seating close to the edge of my chair. So the swaying was very distinct, almost like the way the ferry would always feel whenever we 1st step onboard it at the pier. A little wobbly.

I instinctively moved my arms back from the keyboard and held on to the edge of my desk, to stable myself. The seasick feeling became a little more pronounced as I shouted aloud to my colleague in the next work station, "Why is the floor moving ah?! And my chair and table too?!" Even WY and WF's drawings which are pinned on the front partition of my work station seemed to be swirling left and right!

My colleague thought that I was joking and probably meant to joke about the racing colleague who had just gone past us, and replied, "No lah, it was J running lah!" I became a little more uncertain and asked even more anxiously, "No lah, it cannot be J. She's already gone out of the door but my chair is still swaying!!" This time, I held on to different parts of my desk, just to be sure.

Then just as suddenly as it had started, the tremors stopped abruptly. The floor stopped swaying and the desk felt still once again. But the seasick feeling lingered on... and on.... By this time, my colleague had come out from her work station and was looking at me curiously and asking, "Are you ok?"

I was ok, yes, except that the seasick feeling was making me a little nauseous - not exactly like wanting to vomit but somehow, like something inside has churned a little and made the head a little "gong gong".

The weird thing was that my colleague is usually much more sensitive to slanting floors, tilted table and chairs, and 'jerky' driving etc, all of which we both call 'motion-sickness causes'. This time, however, she didn't feel anything amiss. I told her that she is very fortunate not to have felt the swaying, it wasn't nice a feelingat all.

It was only minutes later that the office maintenance people sent an email to everyone to clarify that there was no building works being carried out in the building. One officer responded to that email and attached this:

Latest update
METEOROLOGICAL SERVICES DIVISION, NEA
TREMOR IN SINGAPORE
INFORMATION ON SOURCE EARTHQUAKE
______________________________________________________________________________________
Serial No.: 2
An earthquake was detected at 11:49am, 6 Mar 2007 in CENTRAL SUMATRA, approximately 430km from Singapore. The magnitude of the earthquake is 6.6 on the Richter scale. The epicentre is located at latitude 0.4 South and longitude 100.4 East.

Later that afternoon, my other colleagues started to ask around if we had felt the tremors earlier. All agreed that they still felt a little seasick even though the floor was no longer swaying. I still felt a bit "gong gong" as the exchange went on.

Some colleagues who were passing by also chipped in to describe the crowds they had seen gathered outside People's Park and how Capital Tower had evacuated the offices in the building. It must have been quite a buzz elsewhere.

Soon after that, CP called to tell me about how the tremors had been in Yishun. R also smsed to ask if we had felt the tremors. He said that HPB had also evacuated everyone from the building!

When I called Mother at home, she said that she hadn't felt any tremors at home. Her headache was more the OL nex door, not any earthquake in Sumatra. Sigh, that headache won't stop any time soon, I guess.

*************************

From the media reports, we learnt that there were 2 rounds of equally strong earthquakes yesterday, but I had felt it only the 1st round.

I was just thinking, the 2nd round of tremors must have come at a time when I was still feeling that lingering seasick feeling and so, for better or for worse, I had been blissfully unaware of the repeat tremors.

Zen 你是谁?谁是你?你到底是谁?

WY and I went on Saturday to this 华艺 concert (title was A Touch of Zen 禅学不二) at the Esplanade Theatre. We had to rush like crazy because we had taken too long to get ourselves ready - primarily because I had taken too long a nap that afternoon, and we had underestimated the time we would need for our "simple" dinner of 鱼生 and coconut juice.

(Incidentally, it was quite amazing that we would actually get the cost of the 鱼生 to increase by about 10 times its original price when we added a can of Calmex abalone to it - talk about 增值百倍!!)

I was pleasantly surprised to find that the leg space in the Estplanade Theatre was rather generous. The air was a little stiffly, though (maybe because we had literally raced across the underpass and then the basement carpark and up 2 escalators and then 1 flight of stairs down before reaching the door, only to run up another flight of carpeted stairs and down a gradual slope and then finally inching our way to our right-in-the-middle seats E16 and E17). Fortunately, we didn't miss the opening, which was so exciting!!

The storyline of the show was, like Zen, simple and minimal. There was this Ao family who was running away from militiamen. The father of the baby called AoXiang was killed (quite soon - so he didn't have to run much). The mother ran on and on (at least 10 rounds? from the front to backstage then to front again) with the militiamen hot on their heels (all those chasing were so exciting and well choreographed that it was really easy to feel for the desperate mother). When she finally gave up because she knew she was not likely to escape, she left her baby at the door of a temple.

The baby AoXiang grew up to become a fine young man but he always felt troubled because he didn't know who his parents were. To cut a long story short, AoXiang's Zen Master sent him away for training. AoXiang tried to search for his mother in the prison but got into a battle with the militiamen instead. From that point onwards, there was so much action (militiamen vs AoXiang vs the monks) it was really quite impossible to breathe evenly throughout the scene.

As expected, AoXiang finally mastered his gongfu well enough to defeat the captain of the militiamen. But his Zen Master insisted that AoXiang had "lost" to himself and to hatred although he may have won the gongfu battle. It was only later that AoXiang became enlightened and realised the true meaning of victory.

The show was a successful blend of martial arts display, drama and heart-pounding drum-music. Chinese drums and gongs of varying sizes were used and the stage set was close to perfect. Really a very good and thrilling experience. 真的是值回票价!!

When the curtains fell, the applause was thunderous! It was so moving to see how the audience appreciated the great performance. :)

WY and I stayed on for the half-hour dialogue with the Director and production crew chiefs. I think WY didn't quite understand most parts of the dialogue but I found all the "background information" so exciting and quite enriching.

After it all ended, we dropped by the River Hong Bao on the opposite side of the Esplanade Drive. WY had a stick of "painted" candy (the artist "drew" an ox using malt syrup) which cost $2. I bought a CNY decoration at $25.

Apart from these, there was not much to look at, maybe because it was already quite late, both the time and the date (14th day of CNY). The crowd was minimal too, mainly mainland Chinese tourists, I think. R and WF picked us up at VCH to go home.

We were all so exhausted. R, WY and WF fell asleep in no time. And myself? I went to bed while my hair was still wet - I actually dozed off drying it.....

Promises

WF kept to his word and behaved well in music class this week. Not only did he follow the lesson quite thoroughly, he also refrained from playing the electone keys and fiddling with its dials when he was not supposed to do so. In other words, he listened to instructions.

*************************

WF also did not throw tantrums when we brought him to 文化艺术团 class today. He said, "Bye!" as he went into the classroom, clutching his wafer-thin bag under his arms. :)

During dismissal, I checked with the teacher on WF's progress in class. She commented that her observation is that WF understands the lessons and is capable of following instructions. However, he tends to lose focus (aka look everywhere else except wherever he should be looking at - be it teacher or text of the song sheets) easily. After a brief discussion, I requested the teacher to be extra firm with WF. She agreed that this is what she will do.

Like the music lessons, I think we ought to revise the 文化艺术团 lessons with WF regularly as we had done with WY before.

Somehow, going through the lessons taught and revising the work regularly were so natural and 'automatic' with WY; we didn't even have to "make special efforts" to do these. But with WF, revision has been minimal. Very bad on our part.... The perpetual excuse of "no time" should be no excuse, right?

WY will say this is "unfair" to him (he has had to regularly practise his work mah!), but to me, this is not being fair to WF.

So, my 1st post-元宵节 resolutions are to conscientiously revise lessons with WF regularly and to give him no less attention as I had done with WY.

Scabies

During our visit to the GP yesterday, Mother told the doctor about how she cooks and gives food to the Old Lady on a daily basis now, and how the OL has this very super itchy condition etc. Mother asked the doctor if there is any risk in dealing with OL and whether the red spots on Mother's body now are likely to have anything to do with OL's condition. Basically, I think Mother is concerned about the occasional bouts of itch which she feels whenever she goes near OL but she does not want to tell us about her own suspicions/fear about this (because we will 'scold' her about the OL mah).

The doctor cautioned that whilst itchy conditions in old people can sometimes be just truly dry skin or allergy eg eczema, we must really be extra careful because some old folks do carry on their bodies a parasite and the associated itchy condition called scabies is highly contagious. She added that this is especially common amongst old folks who neglect their hygiene, or who are institutionalised. In response to my questions, she explained the treatment which will be required for such a condition. Very troublesome.

See the following information which I subsequently extracted from the National Skin Centre's website:

SCABIES

What is scabies?

Scabies is a very itchy skin problem, that commonly affects the hands, wrists and fingers. It can affect the elbows, armpits, nipples and buttocks. In males, the genitals are often affected. The itch is worse at night.

How do you get scabies?

This condition is caused by the scabies mite, which is a small parasite that burrows into the skin of infected patients. It is usually transmitted by close person-to-person contact, and by sharing the same bed or clothings, especially among children and people with poor hygiene. The whole family can be affected as scabies is quite infectious.

How is scabies treated?

The mite can be killed rapidly by the use of an effective medication eg. Benzyl benzoate emulsion or malathion or permethrin. Attention should be paid to the specific instruction on how the medication should be applied.

Why does it itch even after treatment?

You may still itch for some days to weeks, after correct treatment. This is because of the development of a hypersensitive reaction of your body to the dead mite. Your doctor would prescribe anti-histamine tablets and steroid creams to stop the itch. DO NOT APPLY the anti-scabies medication repeatedly, and excessively unless advised by your doctor, as you can develop a more severe dermatitis.

What are the medication to treat Scabies?

These include benzyl benzoate emulsion (for 3 days), malathion (Derbac) (1 day), crotamiton (Eurax) lotion or cream (5 days). For infants and young children, it is preferable to use crotamiton, or permethrin.

How should the medication agent be applied ?

First Evening:
Immediately after a shower, apply the lotion to the whole body from neck downwards, even to the unaffected areas. Do not forget the soles, armpits, genitals and other body folds. Do not apply on the face. Do not wash away the lotion until the next evening. Re-apply the lotion on the hands each time you wash them.

Second and Third Evenings:
Repeat the above treatment in the same manner. To eradicate any mites in the family, all warm clothings should be washed in hot water and then sunned. Bed linen, pillow case, pillows, mattresses should be dusted and sunned.

Is it necessary to treat family members?

Any family member with itch, or those with close body contact, or share the same bed or linen with the patient, whether affected or not, should have the same treatment at the same time. Your doctor would usually supply sufficient medicine for all of them.

Some other literature on UK medical websites also records that medical practitioners nowadays believe that bodily contact is not necessary for transmission of scabies; even standing close or nearby is sufficient for the parasitic mite to 'jump' to a new host! Yuks!

The thought of such a horrendous condition being transmitted to any of us is unbearable, so I called TYP to tell her about it and ask her to try to find out from the NZer exactly what medical condition OL is having.

To summarise, the result of this 'assignment' is this:

NZer will not say exactly what condition it is, although he claims that all the tests which the doctors had sent OL to did not show up anything contagious. But his comments are that even though the tests have showed up nothing contagious, if the OL continues to refuse to shower etc, then it won't be surprising even if contagious conditions do develop over time.

But surely, there must be a diagnosis? Damn that NZer! He is just not telling. >:(

Anyway, I hope TYP can try to find real information from the other possible source of information. R has commented that in the worst case scenario, we may just write in to AH for the information, but this must be KIV for the time being lah.

Until then, we will just have to keep our fingers crossed and hope that Mother's chix poxies clear up and nothing else lingers on after the estimated one-month recovery period. The doctor had cautioned that any red spots or dry skin or itch which continues after the chix poxies have cleared up should be investigated properly; scabies can manifest as red spots or innocent-looking dry skin.

Incidentally, Mother said the 4th-D-In-Law who lives next door, stopped by the evening before and mentioned to Mother that she (4DIL) had just gone to see the doctor because of some bouts of itching on her neck!...... scary, man!

After several rounds of discussion and a lot of hard thinking, Mother is considering ordering tingkat for the OL. Father supports this and has, surprisingly, offered to chip in 50% of the tingkat cost.

Obstinancy

Briefly, an update of Mother's condition: We didn't go to hospital for blood test because Mother changed her mind about that when her friend advised her against it. The friend's daughter was detained and quarantined at the hospital for several days when she went there with similar symptoms some time last year. Mother's immediate thoughts were: "What's going to happen to my tour group of 60+ persons then?!"

So we went to my GP instead. Doctor saw her, looked at the poxies thoroughly and asked many (and I mean, really many) questions. Conclusion at end of consultation was that 80% - 90% chance, this is really chix pox. Whatever "chix pox" Mother had had as a child was probably either not full-blown or was something else and not really chix pox, because if she had had a full-blown chix pox before, a 2nd attack would be more in the form of shingles (which usually involves more localised poxies) and not like what she has now (non-localised vesicles scattered over parts of the body, including tongue, scalp and even under the foot).

So, advice was to take and complete the course of acyclovir which Mother already started yesterday (although this may be a little late because more than 2 days have passed since onset of red spots) and to take antihistamine, if necessary, for relief of itch. Also need to drink lots of water and rest well. Doctor advised Mother to cancel her Saturday trip to Malaysia.

Given THA's earlier advice to Mother about the risk of infectious persons being stopped by customs at the Causeway, Mother readily agreed with the doctor that she will give the trip a miss although she will still help to organise her members into their respective buses etc on Saturday morning.

Before we left the clinic, I asked the doctor if the red spots could possibly suggest that there is excessive toxins in the liver or if there is any liver ailment - this was what the block 51quack had told Mother earlier on mah. Doctor explained that such a conclusion is not possible without any other tests, eg blood test; liver problems would be suspected if there were signs of jaundice - she does not see any on Mother.

****************************

This morning, Mother called me on the phone (see below). In the course of our conversation, she suddenly said, "..... I won't be at home tomorrow what!"

Confused, I asked, "Why won't you be at home?.... (after 2 seconds of silence)You are still going on your Malaysia trip ah?! I thought you agreed with the doctor that you mustn't go already?!"

Her response? .... "Then what's going to happen to my 60+ persons?!" She went on to say that the tour agent has told her that the poxies on her face are not obvious lah, won't get her detained by customs; she has also asked several of her friends, and all have reassured her that there's nothing to be afraid of lah.... and she will put on a long-sleeved blouse so that the poxies will not be so easily seen lah.....

When I asked, "Won't you be concerned that the chix pox may be passed on to your members?", this was what she said: "No lah, won't pass on to anyone lah, I don't share food with them or sleep with them what, no lah, won't pass to them lah...."

She doesn't want to remember that neither has she "shared food" with WY or WF or "slept together" with WF or WY.
